These blockages occur as a result of the following abnormal processes: increased oily sebum production, excessive deposition of the protein keratin, colonization of the follicle by Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) bacteria, and the resultant pro-inflammatory reactions in the skin. In addition, S. aureus is also reported to play an important role in the pathogenesis of acne.
